Take care of your toothbrush in order to better create a healthy smile. Let’s review some basics of toothbrush care and proper brushing technique, to ensure you get the best clean.

First, know that toothbrushes should be replaced, frayed, worn out, stiff, or once every 3-4 months–whichever comes soonest. Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush that is the correct size and shape for your mouth. It should be able to reach all areas of the mouth.

Brush your teeth by placing your brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums, and use short, tooth-wide strokes to clean off food, plaque, and debris. Some people find it beneficial to set a 30-second timer for each quadrant of the mouth, to better ensure a thorough clean. Brushing should take 2 minutes each time.

When you are finished brushing, rinse your toothbrush completely, rinsing off toothpaste, debris, food, and bacteria. Store in an upright position in an open, well-ventilated area. Keep your toothbrush away from other toothbrushes, so the heads don’t touch–this would contaminate the brushes and necesitate purchasing a new one.
