Good habits that are helpful and healthy should be applauded and promoted. One of the best habits to start is proper oral health maintenance.
A multitude of familiar dental diseases can be eradicated by practicing good oral hygiene every day. Here are some easy habits to follow for healthy teeth.
Daily Brushing and Flossing
At a minimum, brushing 2x per day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste containing fluoride is a must. Gently clean the gumline where plaque builds up to clean food and bacteria from your teeth. In addition to that, flossing once a day gets to the places your brush cannot. Also, buy a new toothbrush when the bristles fray.
Healthy Eating
Stay away from foods and drink that contain copious amounts of sugar or starches, and increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. This not only helps to maintain a healthy weight, but it also stimulates the flow of saliva which protects against tooth decay.
Regular Dental Check-ups and Cleaning
To identify dental problems before they become complicated it is necessary to visit your dentist frequently. Twice a year (every 6 months) is the standard.
Limit Alcohol
Research says that chronic alcoholism is related to cancer of the mouth and throat. If you drink heavily, seek balance and limit your consumption.
Avoid Tobacco Products
The use of any type of tobacco product: cigarettes, pipes, cigars, and chewing tobacco can instigate periodontal (gum) disease, not to mention many types of oral and throat cancer.
